Application of Metal Bellows in Valves
Release date:
2018-10-23
Metal bellows are characterized by their ability to accommodate corresponding displacements under the action of pressure, axial force, lateral force, or bending moment, and they exhibit properties such as pressure resistance, vacuum tightness, corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and long service life. Consequently, they are increasingly widely employed across numerous industrial sectors. Bellows are also utilized as sealing and isolation components in valves.
Among various bellows‑type valves—whether globe valves, throttling valves, control valves, or pressure‑reducing valves—the bellows serves as a packing‑free sealing and isolation element for the valve stem. During operation, the bellows undergoes axial displacement and retraction in tandem with the stem, while simultaneously withstanding fluid pressure and ensuring a tight seal. Compared with packed‑seal valves, bellows‑sealed valves offer superior reliability and a longer service life.
Accordingly, bellows valves are widely employed in industries such as nuclear energy, petroleum, chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, and aerospace. In practical applications, bellows are often welded integrally with other components—such as flanges, connecting pipes, and valve stems—to form bellows assemblies. Welding has thus become an indispensable and critical step in the manufacturing of these assemblies. With advances in research and production, new requirements have emerged for welding tooling and equipment used in the fabrication of bellows.
