What are the standard performance characteristics of metal expansion joints?
Release date:
2023-09-18
Metallic expansion joints have two categories of standard performance: one comprises performance characteristics essential for reliable service, such as pressure resistance, temperature resistance, fatigue resistance, and elastic compensation; the other includes attributes like stiffness and cross-sectional area, which are not directly required for operation but significantly influence piping system design and the proper application of metallic expansion joints. Therefore, it is crucial to gain a thorough understanding of both categories.
Pressure resistance of the compensator
Compensators operate within pipelines and must withstand internal or external pressures, which necessitates that they possess adequate pressure‑resistance. This is ensured through careful design and testing to establish appropriate structural parameters. The pressure‑resistance specified in the design corresponds to the design pressure. As compensators are manufactured as a series of products, they are categorized by nominal diameter and nominal pressure. In most cases, their design pressures follow standard series values of 0.25, 0.6, 1.0, 2.5… MPa. Only a limited number of products are designed to meet specific pressure requirements outside these standard nominal‑pressure series. During piping system design, engineers determine the maximum operating pressure based on actual needs and then select a compensator with a nominal pressure that matches this requirement.
Compensation capacity of the compensator
The compensating capacity of a compensator stems from the elastic deformation of its bellows, which can manifest as axial extension, compression, bending, or combinations thereof. The magnitude of this compensating capacity is determined by the designer according to specific requirements and is expressed in the product as a specified rated compensation amount—indicating the maximum compensating capability under given conditions. Different types of compensators employ distinct compensation modes, primarily including axial, lateral, angular, and their combined configurations.
